Bundesliga Legends Network: Lukas Podolski

The former Germany international is only the second still-active player to join the Bundesliga Legends Network.

The 2014 FIFA World Cup winner has become the latest member of the Bundesliga Legends Network.

The former Bundesliga players act as ambassadors for the German league and its initiatives around the world.

The list includes some of the Bundesliga’s biggest global stars, such as Jürgen Klinsmann (Germany), Philipp Lahm (Germany), Lothar Matthäus (Germany), Jay-Jay Okocha (Nigeria), Claudio Pizarro (Peru) and Zé Roberto (Brazil).

Jörg Albertz, Anthony Baffoe, Bum-Kun Cha, Steven Cherundolo, Makoto Hasebe, Jürgen Klinsmann, Philipp Lahm, Lothar Matthäus, Jay-Jay Okocha, Yasuhiko Okudera, Pavel Pardo, Claudio Pizarro, Lukas Podolski, Wynton Rufer, Paulo Sergio, Jiayi Shao, Chen Yang and Ze Roberto – all names who left an indelible mark on the Bundesliga.

Lukas Podolski, on his excitement to represent the Bundesliga and to contribute to getting even more people around the world excited about German football.

Podolski got his Bundesliga break in 2003 at his boyhood club 1. FC Köln. He moved on to Bayern Munchen where he won the double, the Bundesliga and the German Cup (DFB Pokal) titles.

Altogether, the striker played a total of 240 matches (94 goals) in the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 for both Köln and FC Bayern.

He has since played in England (Arsenal), Italy (Inter Milan), Turkey (Antalyaspor, Galatasaray) and Japan (Vissel Kobe) and also made a total of 130 international appearances (49 goals) for the Germany national team between 2004 and 2017.

Nowadays, the 36-year-old plays for Polish first division team Gornik Zabrze – in the neighbouring town of his birthplace Gliwice.

Alongside Eintracht Frankfurt’s Japan international defender, Makoto Hasebe, Lukas Podolski is the only still playing member of the Bundesliga Legends Network.
