I’ve been very lucky to have one of the best seats in the house as some of the best talents walked through Ikamva and help the club set milestone after milestone.
The whole thing was done in such a special way, Benni McCarthy had signed for Ajax from Seven Stars and had just had a short loan spell at CT Spurs before he left.
To launch the club, Ajax came down for two exhibition matches against a selected team of players from both the local clubs. It was an amazing experience.
One of my personal favourite moments with the club, and there were many, was Diski Nites, an evening with former Ajax goalkeeper Stanley Menzo, who was also the Ajax CT head coach at the time.
If you don’t know, Menzo was the first sweeper-keeper, Johan Cruyff’s crazy idea of developing the keeper’s ball-playing skills and be the 11th player. It’s standard stuff for the modern goalkeeper, with Itumeleng Khune, Andre ter Stegen, Manuel Neuer and many others all comfortable with the ball in their feet.
Cruyff felt the young Menzo back then had the good to take the idea of a sweeper-keeper to the real game. It was also special because the goalie at Ajax is African star Andre Onana.
We also made a first-time attempt to record that show and broadcast it LiVE on Facebook as raw as possible.
Enjoy!
