Let me tell you some of the reasons I’m not 100% for the MTN8, the Premier Soccer League’s Top Eight knockout tournament.
There are only eight teams that participate, which means teams will only face two opponents before they reach the Final.
Because of the broadcast deal, the semi-finals are played over two legs, just to please the sponsor and at least guarantee them more weeks of TV.
This year’s tournament will force us to romanticise the fact that we’re gonna have Polokwane City or Highlands Park in the #MTN8 Final. We are going to watch these two teams battle it out over two legs of a semi-final.
Everybody loves the underdog story, but I’m quite sure this is not how people like the story to be told.
We’re going to talk about how Polokwane beat defending champs Cape Town City and how Highlands got the better of the “Soweto Giants” Orlando Pirates.
Plus, SuperSport United to face Mamelodi Sundowns again. Yet another derby in less than 2 weeks, which means we’re going to have to suck whatever is left in the #TshwaneDerby bone.
Because I’m more of a solutions man than just dropping complaints just because I can. I actually feel like MTN can get a lot more out of the relationship with the PSL if they were to be a sub-sponsor of the Premiership or include the Glad Africa Championship.
Instead of just a few weeks of TV eyeballs, MTN could do a lot more as a “MOBILE PARTNER” to the PSL over a full season.
Mobile phones has been successful in their penetration and reach of even the most remote areas.
MTN could make the most of this with mobile products and innovation.
Just imagine:
- A whole dedicated PSL App presented by MTN? All that content and all those engagement opportunities with fans?!
Shuuuuuu, it is only just an African dream for now!
I fully agree with you Umjaka.
1) The MTN8 format is like a saedinea crammed in a tin, with very little sauce! #AddMoreSauce
2) It would make for more interesting football if it were a #Championship8 winner vs a #PSL8 winner in the #MNT8 FINAL.
3) I just love the #MTNDiskiApp idea!
